Don't eat during the period

Never eat these foods during periods

Many women suffer from unbearable cramps, heavy bleeding, discomfort and flatulence during their menstrual cycle. While some experts consider these effects as a normal part of the periodic cycle, others believe that excess of any of these symptoms can be an early sign of slackening reproductive health. But did you know, unbearable cramps or uneasiness is not always related to your health, rather these are a result of the unhealthy foods that you love indulging during this phase. Here are some common foods that can make your periods miserable and it’s time to strike them out!

Salty foods

Most of us love binging on a pack of chips or processed snacks that are no doubt delicious, but are loaded with additives and salt. Excess intake of sodium rich (salty) foods can hold up a lot of water causing water retention, bloating, discomfort, stomach ache.

Red meat

During the menstrual cycles the body produces a compound called Prostaglandins, which helps the uterus to contract and get rid of the uterine lining causing menstrual flow. Consuming red meat during this time can cause excess bleeding and cramps due to its high iron and prostaglandins content.

Caffeine

Drinking tea or coffee is the best way to unwind, but are you drinking too much caffeine based drinks during periods? This can be one of the reasons why you suffer from extreme stomach cramps or bloating. This is due to the tendency of caffeine to hold up water in the body, which causes discomfort in the stomach, hampers the bowel movement by causing diarrhea and also triggers headaches. It is best to go for zero caffeine drinks or just stick 1-2 cups a day.

Sugar

Some people prefer gorging on sweet treats, candies, milky chocolates, packed desserts to satiate their odd cravings during their periods. Doing this can not only spike your blood sugar levels, but will also affect your mood, leading to mood swings, trigger depression and what not! This is because excess sugar intake leads to sudden rise of energy in the body, which declines after sometime leaving you feeling drained.

Alcohol can leave you drained and dehydrated, which can trigger bloating, upset stomach, nausea and diarrhea. It may instantly lift up your mood, but can leave you feeling low on energy and worsen your headache, cramps or body pain.
